Cruelty Has a Human Heart (choir)

Instrumentation: S.A.T.B. - vc. - pno.

PROGRAMME NOTE

Cruelty has Human Heart was written as a response to ‘How falsely doth the world accuse’ Chorale38 from Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

The text is taken from Blake’s poem A Divine Image in Songs of Experience:

Cruelty has a Human Heart
And Jealousy a Human Face
Terror the Human Form Divine
And Secrecy, the Human Dress

The Human Dress, is forged Iron
The Human Form, a fiery Forge.
The Human Face, a Furnace seal’d
The Human Heart, its hungry Gorge.
