Gavin grew up in a mining community, playing in brass bands and later composing for them. Long after the pit closures many colliery bands thrive and still make music at the highest level. Gavin says: “Dark Arteries is inspired by the miners’ strike of 1984-1985 and will be the first ever ballet accompanied by brass band. This deeply personal composition will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the miners’ struggle whilst celebrating the unique legacy of the British brass band movement in which I grew up. For this ‘world first’ I will draw on my own experiences to create a work that is moving and poignant, looking at brass band culture and the experiences of people in ex-mining communities.”

The first performance will be by Tredegar Town Band, at the Festival of Brass, 31 Jan 2015 at Royal Northern College of Music and the stage premiere will be given at Sadler’s Wells, London in May 2015. The ballet will tour to venues across the UK during 2015/16.

Gavin began working with Rambert as the Company’s first music fellow in 2010 and further commissions followed including a prestigious New Music 20×12 commission from PRSF, as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
